One man is dead following an incident in downtown Ottawa Thursday morning, according to Ottawa police.

Several police cars, fire trucks and at least one ambulance converged on a building in downtown Ottawa adjacent to the prime minister’s offices on Thursday morning for what Ottawa police deemed a “medical emergency.”

Ottawa police later tweeted that they were investigating the death of a man.

Reports on Thursday from the Ottawa Citizen and CBC Ottawa indicated that a shooting involving a lone RCMP officer in a private office may have been the source of the medical emergency and that the officer was deceased.

The RCMP’s Corporal Valerie Thibodeau confirmed to Global News that an RCMP officer required medical assistance, but did not provide further details on the individual’s condition or what happened.

The prime minister was not in his Langevin Block office at the time of the incident, which took place around 9 a.m. Police tweeted that there was no danger to the public as a result of the emergency at the Thomas D’Arcy McGee Building, located at 90 Sparks St.

The building houses the offices of the Federal Court, RCMP offices, the office of the Communications Security Establishment Commissioner, offices connected to the Privy Council Office and offices linked to Security Intelligence Review Committee, among others. There is also retail space in the building.

More to come.
